Holbein Irodori is also suitable for woodblock printing.

Gouache is an opaque watercolor paint that can be used in a variety of ways. When starch glue is added, gouache colors become stretched so as to extend the pigment, resulting in color that can be used as paints for woodblock prints. Irodori colors are rich & saturated even without starch glue and they help expand the range of expression and creativity.

1.

Dilute the paint with water, then prepare the glue by diluting it with water. The glue should be thick enough to fall off when you lift it.

2.

A dry woodblock will absorb paint, so first dampen the woodblock with water using a mist spray or a wet dish towel. Put two or three drops of glue on the woodblock, then paint on the woodblock with a brush, and blend the glue and paint into the woodblock.

3.

Place a piece of washi paper onto the woodblock and gently press it down with a baren. We recommend laying a sheet of parchment paper on top of the washi paper to prevent damage to the washi paper while using the baren.

4.

Remove the washi paper from the woodblock.
For multi-color printing, you will need as many woodblocks as there are colors.

Testimonials

Compared to the mineral pigments used in Traditional Japanese painting, Irodori tube paints are very convenient and easy to use. Irodori provides two types of gold, so you can use them in different ways.

The paintings I always paint seem to have Japanese feel to them. Irodori gives me the ability to feel close to the delicate colors that Japanese people have loved for a long time. It was nostalgic and like a fresh impression.

The Irodori color intensity was excellent and it performed well with Washi Paper. I think Irodori colors are suitable for painting with wood grain like we find in woodblock prints. Irodori colors are pre-selected for each season, which made my color choices much easier to determine.
