Holbein Artists’ Colored Pencils are produced to meet the high demands for exceptional performance and handling characteristics by artists worldwide. They were developed as colored pencils for coloring, drawing and tableaux, as well as sketches and designs. Holbein Colored Pencils are an incomparable example of the great pride Holbein takes in producing the finest color in the world since 1900.
Fine soft lead for smooth drawing
Holbein Artists’ Colored Pencils are oil-based colored pencils made with carefully selected fine grain pigments. Thicker leads enable for fast and uniform shading. Even rough (uneven) surfaces can be completely covered with color. The softness of the lead also allows you to draw smooth, thin lines, even over the top of an under layer.
Beautiful layering
Applying darker colors over lighter colors produces beautiful layers. Holbein Artists’ colored pencil soft leads make it possible to apply three of four colors in layers, which is an indispensable attribute for artists. All 150 colors are intense, so you can use them even on light colored papers.
Thick lead and thick barrel for easy drawing.
A 3.8 mm-diameter lead allows you to color in a large area at once. Its 7.8-mm diameter barrel makes it easy to grip and reduces hand fatigue.
Superior Lightfastness Ratings
Holbein Artists’ Colored Pencils use carefully selected high quality pigments which deliver bright and intense non-muted color. Holbein Artists’ Colored Pencils are an ideal medium to use for artworks that require long lasting preservation. * Please note lightfast ratings vary from color to color. See Holbein Artists’ Colored Pencils lightfast ratings in this booklet.

I cannot forget how excited I was when I got this set of colored pencils. When I opened the case, I saw a set of unique colored pencils with a mix of colors I wouldn't find anywhere else. They made me feel happy even before I used them! These colored pencils produce beautiful colors and are easy to mix colors by layering, so it is easy to create the colors I like. In the picture of a cat presented as an example, I had to mix colors many times in order to express its thickness, solidity, coat, and other features, but I could successfully achieve what I wanted to express with no problem!

I have used the colored pencils habitually for more than 15 years. They are soft and lay down color more easily, so they are great for expressing complex hues when multiple layers of colors are applied and for drawing detailed images when they are sharpened to a very fine point. It is also great for me to get a wide variety of pastel colors while I often use metallic colors, such as copper and antique silver, too. They are reliable painting media that withstand mixed techniques with watercolors.

I produce paper using an original technique, and paint pictures on it mainly using Artists' Colored Pencils. Because they have a large number of colors and are moderately soft with a right consistency, they can add depth to a drawing when I apply multiple layers. Many people are often amazed at this picture, saying, "Did you paint this picture by colored pencils?!", but for me, the rhythm of drawing a picture with the colored pencils fits the rhythm of my thinking. Viewing a picture sharpening the colored pencils with a knife is a precious time for me in pursuing creation.

These colored pencils give you a great satisfaction in terms of color saturation, layering, and blending. Seeing colors layered on paper merge together and change gradually makes me feel very happy. They can be used not only for expressing a touch like watercolors but also for oil-painting techniques. Furthermore, Meltz expands the range of expression achievable by the colored pencils, which makes me feel that more freedom of expression is given. So these colored pencils are full of fun.

The colored pencils can produce beautiful colors, and change the color intensity quite well by changing the amount of pressure you apply to them, so you can produce beautiful gradations with no unevenness. In addition, another appeal is that you can create depth of color with no turbidity when multiple layers of colors are applied. My favorites are burgundy, indigo, ash rose, and smoke blue, all of which are indispensable for my creation. The colored pencils are easy to use for beginners, so they are recommended in my class.
